Tom Shaffer stepped down as musical director of DCCB at the conclusion of our 2025-2026 season. Beginning in the fall, we are pleased to announce Tanya Murphy as our new director.
Under Mrs. Murphy’s leadership, the Durham Community Concert Band will continue to uphold its longstanding mission while pursuing new opportunities for growth and engagement. Her vision emphasizes collaborative performances, innovative and diverse programming, and expanded outreach, bringing music to audiences in both traditional venues and new community spaces.
Tom’s warm personal style and unselfish dedication to DCCB, its musicians and to music have made DCCB one of the most successful cultural organizations in the Triangle area. DCCB is an all volunteer organization with no audition requirements. This results in a wide variety of musical skills of its members. Tom brought the entire band to a high performance level, irrespective of the diversity of skills.
Tom’s dedication to DCCB inspired the band to grant him the title of Conductor Emeritus, to honor his commitment to the Durham Community Concert Band for over 30 years.
