The Durham Community Concert Band is pleased to announce the appointment of Tanya Murphy as its new Conductor!

Mrs. Murphy brings more than 30 years of distinguished experience in music education and ensemble leadership. She has demonstrated exceptional artistry as a flutist with the Fayetteville Symphonic Orchestra, Fayetteville Symphonic Band, and Durham Community Band, along with her accomplished direction through her work with the North Carolina Ambassadors Band, as a guest Honor Band conductor across North and South Carolina, and as an adjudicator for marching band and Music Performance Adjudication (MPA) festivals. Throughout her career, Mrs. Murphy has served as a dedicated band director in middle and high schools in Cumberland, Johnston, Harnett, Wake, and Orange Counties, where she built and led thriving band programs. She also developed highly successful colorguard and winter guard programs, mentoring over 40 students and fostering excellence in both performance and teamwork.
In 2023, Mrs. Murphy retired from her role as a band director in Hillsborough, North Carolina, concluding a highly successful career dedicated to building and strengthening music programs. She is a recipient of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Award of Excellence (2018), a National Board-Certified educator, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Campbell University and a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina. Throughout her career, her ensembles have consistently earned superior performance ratings, while her students have achieved recognition at All-County, All-District, and All-State levels.
Under Mrs. Murphy’s leadership, the Durham Community Concert Band will continue to uphold its longstanding mission while pursuing new opportunities for growth and engagement. Her vision emphasizes collaborative performances, innovative and diverse programming, and expanded outreach, bringing music to audiences in both traditional venues and new community spaces.
“My goal is to foster a welcoming and supportive environment where musicians of all levels can grow, connect, and share in the joy of music,” Mrs. Murphy shared.
